The far left picture is the high intensity light shining on the bottom of a used cvc pipe cleaner can (4 fluid once size) with a small amount of coal in it. I heated the can with a propane torch to darken before hanging it in the bright light. I added a bolt to the lid of the can with a hole drilled in it to let the gas out. I suspended it with a copper wire normally used for house wiring.

The middle left picture is of the burning gas that destructively distilled gives off. I did a web search and found that the primary gases are methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. I also seen some sulfur gas probably as SO2. The oils are said to be napthalene, benzene and toluene just to name a few which none of them are healthy for almost all life. The flame burnt for about 30 minutes with just a small handful of coal. Not all of the coal was consumed in the reaction.

The middle right picture is of the coke, coal and coal tar mixture that was left after the gas production died down. A more pure coke may be produced with a longer cook time or by adding more light energy by using mirrors or a bigger solar reflector. The green in the larger image was not seen with the naked eye I think it is a camera thing.

The far right picture is of the lid covered in and oily residue that I am not sure if it is called coal tar or is one of the primary oils that destructively distilled coal is know to give off. I also noticed that the bottom of the can also changed color after I darkened it with the propane torch. In closing I would like to say that this experiment is not intended to be reproduced but is only for thought of what can be done. Thanks and I hope you enjoyed this little experiment.
